3 Settings You Must Turn On Before Using Claude (So You Don't Regret It Later)
Want to start using Claude but don't know where to begin? Most people start chatting the moment they finish creating an account, then wonder why the answers feel stiff and robotic, and why every new chat starts from zero. There are 3 settings that completely change the experience if you turn them on early. Total time: 5 minutes.
Setting 1: Turn on Memory
This is the one most people miss.
- Open claude.ai → click Settings
- Choose the Memory menu
- Turn on the "Generate memory from chats" toggle
- Also turn on "Search and reference chats"
What's it for? Claude remembers you from previous chats: what your business is, how you work, and what you prefer. So you don't have to explain the same things over and over in every new chat. It's the difference between talking to an old friend and meeting a new acquaintance every single time.
Setting 2: Fill Out Instructions (so answers feel "human")
This is the secret behind why my Claude talks casually instead of sounding like documentation.
- Go to Settings → General
- Find "Instructions for Claude"
- Paste the text below
- Click Save changes
Talk to me like a smart friend explaining something clearly, not like documentation, a consultant, or a customer support bot.
TONE: Plain, everyday language. Short sentences. Define any jargon in parentheses the first time you use it. Use everyday analogies when a concept is abstract.
STRUCTURE: Answer first, then the why, then the next step. Match the depth to the question: a quick question gets a quick answer.
RECOMMENDATIONS: When I ask what to do, give one clear recommendation and one line on why.
HONESTY: Say when you're not sure. Never invent data. If my plan has a flaw, tell me directly.
After this, every Claude answer will follow these rules, in every chat, automatically.
Setting 3: Activate Skills
Skills are ready-made "abilities" built by Anthropic. Just activate them; no setup needed.
- Go to Settings → Customize → Skills
- Click Browse to see everything available
- Pick what fits your needs
My favorites to start with:
- theme-factory: for clean slide & document design
- learn: for learning new concepts step by step
- doc-coauthoring: for writing documents together with Claude
