How to Install Claude Code (Complete Beginner's Guide, 2026)

Everyone's talking about Claude Code, but almost nobody teaches you how to install it from scratch. The whole process takes 10 minutes if you know the steps. Here's the complete guide, written for people who are NOT programmers.

What is Claude Code?

Claude Code is an AI assistant from Anthropic that works directly on your laptop. It doesn't just answer chats; it actually gets things done: creating files, writing documents, processing Excel data, even building apps. The difference from regular Claude? Claude Code has "hands", not just a "mouth".

What you'll need

• A Mac or Windows laptop
• A Claude account with the Pro plan (±$20/month)
• An internet connection
• 10 minutes

Step 1: Subscribe to Claude Pro

1. Go to claude.ai and log in or create an account
2. Open Settings → Billing
3. Choose the Pro plan (±$20/month)

Why Pro? Claude Code is INCLUDED in the Pro plan, so you don't pay anything extra. On the pricing page, look for the "Includes Claude Code" line under the Pro column.

Step 2: Download an IDE

An IDE (Integrated Development Environment) is the fancy name for "the app where coding work happens". Don't worry, you don't need to code. It's just the home for Claude Code.

Pick one (both are free):

• VS Code → code.visualstudio.com (most popular, my recommendation)
• Antigravity → antigravity.google (Google's, newer)

Download it, install it, and open it, just like any regular app.

Step 3: Install the Claude Code Extension

1. Inside the IDE, open the Extensions menu (the boxes icon in the left sidebar)
2. Search for "Claude Code"
3. IMPORTANT: pick the official one from Anthropic (orange starburst logo + millions of downloads)
4. Click Install

Step 4: Connect Your Account

1. Once installed, a Claude symbol appears at the top right of the IDE. Click it
2. Choose "Claude.ai Subscription" (the top option)
3. Log in with your Pro account
4. Done! The Claude Code chat panel opens. Just start talking 🚀

Most common errors (and fixes)

• "Extension doesn't show up" → restart the IDE first
• "Can't log in" → make sure your default browser is logged into claude.ai
• "Keep hitting limits" → the Free plan isn't enough; you need Pro

Installed. Now what?

Try this first command: ask Claude Code to organize the files in your Downloads folder, or ask it to build a report from an Excel file. Start with small tasks. You'll quickly discover how much work it can take off your plate.
